She was an imposing actress and confident woman. Whether it was her being rescued in the film by Charles Laughton in The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1939), falling in love in a blackened coal sky with Walter Pidgeon in How Green Was My Valley (How Green Was My Valley, 1941) or learning about the miracle of life from Natalie Wood in Miracle on 34th Street (Miracle on 34th Street, 1947) or in a battle in the face of John Wayne in The Quiet Man (The Quiet Man, 1952) Maureen O'Hara, the book-length biography of the legendary screen actress hailed by a lot of people as "the queen of technicolor", is a first. The book follows the actress from her childhood in Dublin until her peak of fame Hollywood movie critic Aubrey Malone draws on new data of the Irish Film Institute production notes from films and details from the old film journals, newspapers and fan magazines. Malone is also a bit more in-depth about the actress's friendship with frequent collaborator John Wayne and her relationship with director John Ford and he addresses the controversial issue about whether the screen goddess could be considered a feminist, or antifeminist character. She was an iconic film star during the golden age cinema, yet her preference to keep her privacy private along with her tradition of making statements that were contrary to her own personal decisions made her an unsolved mystery. The first biography to reveal the woman who was who was behind the larger-than-life persona, this book dispels misconceptions and provides a balanced evaluation of one of the more famous stars in cinema history.
